How Freitag bags became a big hit

The Freitag story began near Zurich’s Hardbrücke, where in 1993 the Freitag brothers Markus and Daniel were living in a student flat on one of Switzerland’s busiest truck routes. «Looking out the kitchen window one day, we came up with the idea to make a messenger bag from one of those dirty 100,000-mile truck tarpaulins», Markus Freitag recalls.
And so it happened… The two bike-riding designers began to produce their 100% waterproof, recycled messenger bags from used tarpaulins, first for themselves and then for friends. Soon after that the first shops came asking. Today, Freitag is a fashion label with a recognition reaching far beyond the borders of Switzerland. A tower built from seventeen freight containers has been the company’s landmark since 2006. It hosts a showroom and sales area in one of Zurich’s trendiest neighbourhoods. Just in time for UEFA Euro 2008™ the two successful entrepreneurs have designed a football made from coloured tarpaulins. The Calcio is available in four styles. www.freitag.ch
