Overall Project Co-ordination (Confederation)
In Switzerland, the public sector (federal and cantonal governments and the event sites) will provide services within the areas of its sovereign capacity, specifically, security and infrastructure/transport. The public sector will also be involved in the areas of national promotion and projects and measures in Switzerland. Moreover, in tandem with Austria, a joint sustainability strategy has been drawn up which sets new standards for the organisation of future large-scale sporting events. The Project Organisation Swiss Public Authorities for the EURO 2008 will orchestrate the co-operation of various bodies of the federal and cantonal authorities and event sites during the preparation and execution of the Euro 2008. It is also orchestrating the co-operation with the Swiss Football Association, Euro 2008 SA, other private-sector partners and representatives in Austria.
Benedikt Weibel commenced his activity as Federal Council delegate for EURO 2008 at the beginning of 2007. Together with the Project Organisation Swiss Public Authorities team (POSPA) and all involved parties, the main focus of the work to be done was placed within a comprehensive project plan, an efficient reporting system was established and the conception foundation was completed.
On the Swiss level, these will be co-ordinated by two steering committees: the political committee headed by Federal Councillor Samuel Schmid and the Steering Committee, to be headed by Benedikt Weibel. The PAPO will come together for “national meetings” every two months for discussions with their colleagues from Austria and in bi-national co-ordination meetings (BiCO meetings) with the EURO 2008 SA Executive Board. They will also work together intensively between meetings in individual areas (especially in the areas of security, sustainability, traffic, withholding tax, visa regulation and customs issues).
