Switzerland is building a new AlpTransit system (NEAT) which will be the centrepiece of a new European railway transport system.
The key elements of the NEAT are the Lötschberg and the Gotthard base tunnels, which are being built at the foot of the Alps in order to avoid the construction of time-consuming gradients. The Gotthard base tunnel will be 57 kms long – the longest railway tunnel in the world. After constructing the audacious alpine roads and the first Gotthard line at the end of the 19th century, Switzerland is again implementing a pioneering project to bring people and goods from north and south Europe closer.
