And what is the Swiss Guard?
Originally, the Swiss Guards were mercenary soldiers serving various masters – just like today’s mercenaries. Now, the term only refers to the Papal Swiss Guard. Since 1971 its sole responsibility is to safeguard the Pope and the Vatican.
